Cumulus clouds fill the sky on a lazy afternoon over the Santa Cruz River Valley of Southern Arizona. Depicting Sonoran Desert scenery near Green Valley, we see the rugged Santa Rita Mountains rising above the landscape. Mount Wrightson, to the left of Mount Hopkins, is the tallest peak in the greater Tucson area and affords views of up to 100 miles from its summit. The locally famous Elephant Head monolith can be seen on the far right of the mountain range. In the cloud- shaded foreground, we see prickly pear cactus, a yucca plant, and interesting scrub brush including the creosote and rocks lining the inviting trail.
Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
