This panoramic view of O'Neill Butte and Zoroaster Temple at Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona is very often the first glimpse visitors will ever see of the canyon. Located off the south rim trail near Mather Point, this view seems to pop out of nowhere after a bit of a trek from the main parking area near the visitor center. I still remember the first time I saw this view in December of 2018, and always wondered what it would look like right before sunset, so I came back to find out. The phenomenal blend of reds and blues, depth and incredible shapes of the landscape are hard to comprehend.
I have visited the Grand Canyon three times now, and this view never fails to amaze me. It is so sudden, vast, expansive, hard to imagine any landmass having this scale. Each time I see it, my brain doesn't accept it as real for a moment, and it looks like I am looking at a mural or wallpaper or something. One could spend years trying to capture all the canyon has to offer...
About Chance Kafka
Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
