Description
The Colorado River cuts through the granite gorge of Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona as seen from Navajo Point along the South Rim. Navajo Point offers some of the best views of the river along the scenic Desert View Drive, a nearly 30 mile long stretch of Arizona Highway 64 that hugs the south rim of the park with many famous overlooks.
Bright morning sunlight overtakes the canyon on a warm, airy summer day. Looking down from Navajo Point, juniper and pinyon trees dot the butte as the view gives away to the cliffs most famously observed from Desert View Point.
Without question, the Grand Canyon is the most iconic landscape in Arizona, the American Southwest, and perhaps the entire US. Stretching for over 200 miles and 20 miles wide at some points, with a depth of over a mile, this massive gorge offers so many different colors, shapes, shadows, and dynamics that it is no secret that painting it can be a challenge. In this impressionistic piece of art, I chose to really focus on the play of light and shadow in the canyon morning. A painterly effect can actually be hard to achieve with the canyon, while holding form and conveying its massive scale. But I was pleased with this result, and it looks especially compelling from a few steps back. I hope you enjoy my Arizona landscape paintings!

The loose strokes and opaque paint give this one a H..O..T..topographical VIBE! Did you paint this one en pleine aire?

I adore the colors in this vertical landscape painting, Chance. Terrific perspective, too.
