Artist's Description
Framed by cliffs and the silhouette of a palm tree, we look out to the west and see the sun setting over the vast Pacific Ocean. The foggy marine layer common to Southern California has broken enough to unveil the pastel pinks and yellows in the sky, as waves crash onto the glistening sandy beach below. Loosely inspired by the shoreline of southern Orange County near Laguna Beach, this painting serves to evoke a feeling of peace and wonder. After a long break from painting, I was compelled to paint this scene after a very memorable trip to Southern California for the New Year, and hope to continue painting more in 2023. I would like to thank my girlfriend, Tia, for encouraging me to paint again; 2022 was a hectic year and I often felt uninspired to paint, but she bought me canvasses for Christmas and told me she wanted to see me paint again. I felt this painting was appropriate, as she spent her childhood in southern Orange County and loves this area.
About Chance Kafka
Tucson based photographer and artist Chance Kafka is a native of Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in the small community of Wheatland, before returning to Laramie for college. He took an interest into photography at a young age, photographing clouds, sunsets, and landscapes. At age 17, he won 1st Place in the Platte County Fair photography competition in 3 out of 5 categories as the only entrant to win more than one category. Following this local success, he worked as a feature writer and photographer for the Platte County Record Times while still in high school.
