Description
This is an acrylic painting celebrating my home state of Wyoming. On crisp and cold winter evenings, the ever-blowing wind causes the clouds in the sky to thin and spread out, creating amazing atmospheric effects and fiery glows of red, yellow and orange like this one.
In the background stands Devi'ls Tower, a National Monument located between Moorcroft, Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, nestled in the western reaches of the Black Hills in northeastern Wyoming. Also known as Bear Lodge, this monolith was believed to have been created via volcanic activity but is very sacred to Native Americans. Devi's Tower is perhaps the second most iconic feature in Wyoming second only to the Grand Tetons.
A crescent moon glows in the icy atmosphere of twilight, and coniferous trees dot the plains. In the foreground, the silhouette of a rider donning a cowboy hat and his horse stop to look out upon the splendor of the western prairie, admiring the sunset amid the snowy grass.
The thought I had in mind when I painted this is one of the state's slogans - "Forever West" which appears on many of the welcome signs upon entering the state.
