Description
In the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, a trail that goes to the top of Mount Kimball named Finger Rock Trail starts at the very end of N. Alvernon Way above the city of Tucson, Arizona. A small ascent up this trail affords unparalleled views of the dramatic mountain range and its namesake, the Finger Rock formation.
Jutting to the sky between two peaks on either side, this pointy monolith resembles a finger pointing to the sky and captures the imagination of those in Tucson who look north.
I have gone to this special spot many times to take photos of the splendor. Classic Sonoran Desert plants dot this landscape including ocotillos and the mighty Saguaro Cactus. The light plays so dramatically on this landscape in the afternoon, especially with clouds in the sky.
I was inspired to paint this magestic scene. In acrylics, I have painted the Finger Rock formation and its surrounding mountains, and the foothill below basking in the golden, radiant light before day's end. A single ocotillo and palo verde have bloomed at the bottom of the painting. You might notice I very vaguely hid my initials in the palo verde. I sometimes do this to put something personal into my paintings. I of course included birds in the corner - a sort of trademark of mine.
This vista overlooking the Catalina Mountains and Finger Rock is one of my very favorite places and I hope this painting does the grandeur and beauty of the canyon, cliffs and peaks justice. There are few mountain ranges I have ever come across as beautiful as the Santa Catalinas, which tower above the Old Pueblo, and I hope looking at this gives you the same feeling of serenity as me.
