Description
I have painted Baboquivari Peak during monsoon season. An impressive granite peak rising high above the surrounding desert to an elevation of 7,700 feet, this remote mountain range is very sacred to the Tohono O'odham Nation residing to the southwest of Tucson. The Creator I'toi is believed by them to live under the mountain.
Views of Baboquivari Peak such as this one are afforded along the desolate Ajo Highway that winds its way through this sacred region of the Sonoarn Desert. A monsoon casts a dramatic sheet of rain over the foothills of the Quinlan Mountains and Kitt Peak which are just off to the right of the painting. A lightning bolt strikes rugged peaks of the Baboquivari Mountains as the radiant last light of day casts its golden on them. Classic plants of the Sonoran desert sit in shadow in the foreground, including a Saguaro cactus, ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, and all of their poky, resilient friends, the agave plants. All are anticipating the rains and water and life they bring.
